What IS a “Blissin'”?
I have used the self-coined word "Blissin's" to sign off many a letter or email for awhile now, and the question has come up more than a few times: "What does "Blissin's" mean? This post will attempt to put the energy behind that idea out into the world. What follows is a shortened history of how "blissin's" became 'a thing' for me.
Since i have always had an interest in music, i have always been fascinated with sounds - and the sounds of words in particular. I remember early in life being fascinated with the word "bliss". I remember walking around and playing with the word in my mind, over and over: "Blisssssss, Blisssssss". I probably didn't even really know what the word meant, but i loved the SOUND of it. Such are the fancies of a child interested in sound, and my infatuation with this word faded in time. It resurfaced again upon reading Joseph Campbell's discussion of 'bliss' in The Power of Myth series with Bill Moyers (which is definitely worth checking out). In my humble opinion, no better life advice can be given than Campbell's admonition to "Follow Your Bliss". I was thrilled to discover that i HAD experienced 'bliss' already in my life - i simply hadn't put that word to my experience.
Cut to a time many years later, i became much more acutely aware of the word "bless". I wondered what it truly meant. I wondered if mere mortals actually HAD the power to "bless" another, etc... (Why DID people say "bless you" after an innocent sneeze and what was actually meant by signing off a letter with "Blessings"?) At some point, it came to my attention that 'bless' and 'bliss' sounded QUITE similar, and i was FASCINATED by this. Though spelled nearly the same, the words are unrelated, but both originate in the Old English tongue.
To 'bless' someone evolved over time from "to consecrate by a religious rite" (and 'blood' was often involved) to later mean that one was invoking the force of a Higher Power to be with or assist another person in some way. "Bliss" originally meant "merriment, happiness, grace, favor". Later, these two words which came from different roots came somewhat closer together thru interactions with other schools of thought. Buddhism and Transcendental Mediation added flavor to the word 'bliss' and differentiated it from mere happiness or joy to represent the attainment of an internal state of peace, unshakeable by an increasingly chaotic world swirling all around us. Since the experience of 'bliss' seemed HIGHLY desirable, i wondered if one could invoke this concept and experience of 'bliss' (even the possibility that one COULD experience it) and confer that to another. Ultimately, i decided the answer was "YES!" and the word "blissin" was born. Today, we use it as a word with that intention in mind.
Ultimately, a "blissin" became just that - "a blessing of bliss" (or "bliss-in", if you will). Through our work/play and through our interactions, i intend to convey the desire and possibility that YOU can experience 'bliss' for yourself, in your own life. I can think of no other better advice than to "Follow your bliss". But, before one can 'follow' it, one must first 'FIND' what this is for each of us and it is here that the path begins.
One person's experience of 'bliss' will be different from another's. Your 'bliss' might come thru to you by creating a business or art that conveys a vision that you have, and these days, a website presence is necessary to advertise and introduce that to the world. If you'd like 'help' with that, perhaps we can help you make that real. Perhaps, we can together mutually solve a business problem together or help communicate your vision/product/service to the world. Perhaps, that experience of bliss comes to you through music. If so, i hope you'll check out the medicine of my music. Maybe, that bliss comes thru laughter, a simple conversation, email or text exchange that we have. Regardless, if these words resonate with you in any way and you feel like we at Blissin's can help you in any way to experience 'the blessing of bliss', feel free to reach out and connect!
With that, we sign off our inaugural first post with: Blissin's To You!
